Integrated Monitoring, Reporting & Verification (MRV) Tool for Kenya and Vanuatu

SCS has developed an integrated MRV system for Kenya that covers all GHG sectors, NDC climate actions, and the energy sector in Vanuatu. This comprehensive tool monitors the impact of climate finance on SDGs and aligns with Climate Change Act provisions, NCCAP, and UNFCCC requirements. The system integrates GHG monitoring, reporting, verification, and data management, which facilitates international cooperation and has the potential to enable GHG emission reductions as internationally transferred mitigation outcomes.

Roadmap and Monitoring, Reporting & Verification (MRV) system for Implementation of the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for Vanuatu

This project aimed to improve Vanuatu's ability to meet its NDC mitigation targets in the energy sector. SCS assisted by creating an NDC implementation roadmap and an easy-to-use MRV database to monitor and report emissions reduction. The primary emphasis was on minimizing the additional workload on the reporting agency while maximizing efficiency in fulfilling NDC commitments.

Review of the Vanuatu National Energy Road Map (NERM 2016 – 2030) Implementation Plan and Development of a NERM Monitoring, Verification, and Evaluation Plan

SCS assessed Vanuatu's progress towards achieving the targets set by the National Environment and Rural Development Policy (NERM) and updated the NERM Implementation Plan (NERM-IP) to align with the government's current priorities. An information technology-based Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) tool was developed to monitor the progress made in natural resource management. The primary objective of this project was to ensure the sustainability of the energy sector and align its goals with the national priorities of Vanuatu.

Roadmap for Implementation of the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for Republic of Nauru

As part of the switch from INDCs to NDCs, SCS helped the Government of Nauru create a roadmap to implement NDCs. The roadmap was explicitly designed for Nauru's unique circumstances. It included consultations with stakeholders, strategies for reducing emissions in specific sectors, an estimation of GHG emissions, an analysis of cost-effectiveness, and planning for sustainability.

Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDC) to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) - Fiji, Vanuatu, Nauru, and Papua New Guinea

SCS provided technical support for developing INDCs for these four countries, guiding them in data collection, strategy formulation, sectoral analysis, and reporting preparation. This support was vital in helping these nations align their climate commitments with international agreements.

Green House Gas Inventory and Mitigation Analysis under the Third National Communications (TNC) to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) - Fiji Islands, Republic of Nauru, and The Cook Islands

Under UNFCCC obligations, SCS assisted Fiji, Nauru, and the Cook Islands develop their GHG inventories and mitigation analyses. This encompassed comprehensive reviews, data collection, uncertainty assessment, and the preparation of mitigation scenarios, enhancing their reporting capabilities.

Development of Second National Communications (SNC) to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) - Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Nauru, and Marshall Islands

SCS assisted these nations in developing SNCs and national GHG inventories. They facilitated compliance with UNFCCC requirements by including components such as adaptation, sustainable development, and climate change impact assessments.

Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMA) Study for renewable energy (rural electrification) sector in Vanuatu

In Vanuatu, SCS developed a NAMA to bring renewable energy solutions to rural electrification, with the goal of achieving 100% electrification for off-grid households and contributing to sustainable development and climate objectives.

Technology Needs Assessment to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) – Fiji Islands

SCS conducted a TNA for Fiji, identifying environmentally sustainable, low-carbon technologies. This assessment was vital for Fiji's commitment to the UNFCCC, aiding technology transfer and addressing climate change concerns.

Technical and Advisory Support on procurement, construction and commissioning of Solar PV micro-grid for Wintua and Lorlow communities on Malekula island, Vanuatu

SCS provided technical assistance for the implementation of solar PV microgrids in Vanuatu. This project aimed to advance renewable energy access, aligning with low-carbon development goals and sustainable rural electrification.

Strengthening the institutional, policy and stakeholder capacity and awareness in target Pacific Island Countries on RE CDM PoA, NAMAs & low carbon development - Fiji, Vanuatu, and Solomon Islands

SCS provided technical assistance and capacity building to raise awareness and improve capacity in Pacific Island Countries on renewable energy, Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Programme of Activities (PoA), Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs), and low-carbon development. This involved mapping renewable energy and climate change programs and developing toolkits to implement NAMA programs.

Waste to Energy resources assessment and policy recommendation for Republic of Fiji Islands

SCS conducted a waste-to-energy resource assessment in Fiji, focusing on waste quantification, feasibility assessments, technology recommendations, and policy framework enhancement. The goal was to harness waste resources for sustainable energy generation.

Implementation of CDM component of European Commission Programme for Capacity Building related to Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) in the Pacific region - Fiji, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Samoa, and Tonga

SCS supported participating Pacific countries in establishing DNAs, fostering a business-friendly environment for CDM projects, and developing a portfolio of CDM projects. This involved identifying potential CDM projects, capacity building, and regional workshops.

Design, installation, and operation of pilot institutional biogas plants in Vanuatu

SCS provided technical support to implement institutional biogas systems in Vanuatu, using kitchen and livestock waste. The project aimed to demonstrate the viability of biogas for sustainable energy generation while training stakeholders and strengthening the country's technical capacity.
